Holidaymakers can now combine snorkelling with art thanks to the world’s first tidal gallery in the Maldives.

The gallery at the Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi resort features semi-submerged exhibits that disappear and reappear as the tide goes in and out.

The installation, called the Coralarium, has been specially located in line with the horizon, leading from an infinity pool.

The Coralarium holds three types of artwork including rooftop sculptures placed at the top of the cube structure as well as underwater art pieces.

There are also sculptures placed on plinths at various heights to highlight tidal movements.

The semi-submerged cube, which creates a bridge between the underwater and overwater worlds, is at a depth of three metres in the lagoon, rising up six metres from the seafloor.

The creators say the materials, textures and configuration of the artwork has been carefully crafted to encourage the settlement of wildlife, so the work replicates the reef, giving nature a chance to thrive.

They claim the gallery structure acts as a sheltered space that offers a permanent sanctuary for ocean life such as fish, crustaceans, octopuses and marine invertebrates.

Guided tours in small groups led by the resort’s resident marine biologists are available several times a day.

While in the evening, an integrated light system illuminates the gallery and attracts marine life while creating an impressive sight from the island shore.

The gallery has been designed by British artist and environmentalist Jason deCaires Taylor, who was one of the first artists to float the idea of submerged art.

He said: ‘Over the years I have realized that the really humbling thing about what we do is that once we submerge the sculptures they’re not ours anymore.

‘As soon as we sink them, they belong to the sea and nature takes over.

‘The Coralarium is a place of preservation, conservation and education.

‘Together with the resort we hope to raise awareness for the protection of Maldivian coral reefs. I want to see a better future for the ocean, for people to see it as a delicate place, worthy of our protection.’
