6 of the Best Teams to Manage on Football Manager 2019 Based on the Summer So Far

Several clubs have made some fantastic signings this summer and have put themselves in a great position to achieve success this summer.

While real football is all well and good the important thing to remember when weighing up this summer’s business is how this will affect your first save come the new edition of Football Manager.

Putting aside the inevitable new features, there are already some interesting saves to be done across the (virtual) footballing landscape for the intrepid manager.

Here’s a look at six of the more interesting saves for your first classic/infuriating save on FM19, when the game comes out around October time.

9. Malaga

Five years ago Malaga were a whisker away from the Champions League semi finals, now they will start 2018/19 in Spain’s second tier.

With a shoestring budget and not much to attract talent to Andalusia other than the year round sunshine, this is not a challenge for the faint hearted. However, the Andalusians boast a decent youth system and a chance at re-building a fallen giant.

8. Atletico Madrid

Staying in Spain, Atletico Madrid present a more beginner-ready challenge with a host of exciting new signings including Gelson Martins and Thomas Lemar.

With Antoine Griezmann tied down to a new deal and Cristiano Ronaldo out of the picture, La Liga could be yours for the taking on FM19, if you’re brave enough to oust Diego Simeone from the hot seat.

7. Aston Villa

The new owners might have confirmed Steve Bruce will be staying at Villa Park for the time being but don’t let that interrupt your fantasy.

The former European Cup winners are ripe for a revamp under new ownership and if you keep Jack Grealish, you have a Premier League-ready playmaker to build your team around.

6. Derby County

Alongside Villa in England’s second tier, Derby should also prove to be a decent challenge on FM19.

The club has a great base to get promoted to the Premier League next season, but the Championship is such a competitive league that you will still have some work to do.

In real life, the Rams have signed Chelsea starlet Mason Mount and Liverpool youngster Harry Wilson, who will give your flair in attacking areas.

With Tom Huddlestone and Joe Ledley in central midfield, you have a solid core. You may need to do some work with the back four if you’re going to go up.

5. LA Galaxy

A Football Manager save in the United States is always an interesting one if you’re a sucker for weird rules and bizarre formats.

It might be a difficult save to get your head around at first (especially if you’ve not managed there before), but can be a great challenge.

LA Galaxy currently boast Ashley Cole, Giovanni dos Santos and Zlatan Ibrahimovic on their ‘roster’ – some decent players that you could really begin to build a team around. They are all also likely to only last another year or two, testing your ability to build a new team.

4. Grimsby Town

Grimsby? Really? Yes!

The transfer business that the League Two club has done this summer has gone under the radar, with the club having made some fantastic signings.

Midfielder John Welsh signed for the Mariners after featuring for Preston in the Championship last season. Highly-rated St Mirren defender Harry Davis and Gillingham regular Jake Hessenthaler are two more of the Mariners’ impressive signings this summer.

3. Liverpool

Unless you’ve thrown your phone and all other internet connected devices into the sea while on holiday this summer, you will know that Liverpool have strengthened superbly well with the signings of Naby Keita, Fabinho, Alisson Becker and Xherdan Shaqiri.

With Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino in the front three, Liverpool have a sensational squad that should be challenging for that elusive first ever Premier League title.

However, the Premier League will be a competitive race this year so you still have some work to do if you want to achieve success and sustain it over a number of years.

2. Wolves

Wolves have just been promoted and are one of the most exciting saves to do on FM19.

The West Midlands club have got a central midfield of Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves for you to build your squad around.

You will also have a solid base with Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio in goal and Willy Boly marshalling the back four. They have also signed Diogo Jota and Jonny Castro from Atlético Madrid, who give you a strong left-hand side.

1. Chelsea

There is plenty that you can do with Chelsea’s squad this summer, especially if you want to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title.

Jorginho and Rob Green (huge signing!) have already arrived at Stamford Bridge so far this summer, but there’s also some deadwood you might want to cut. The likes of Tiemoue Bakayoko, Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley may have to go – as they probably won’t make the cut for your match day squad.

Chelsea have some quality players, but there is room for improvement in all areas of the pitch.
