Airbnb has plenty of unique properties on its books, but perhaps none so unusual as this – a homestay on the Great Wall of China

Airbnb worked with historians and designers in Beijing to turn one of the landmark’s ancient watch towers into a unique crash pad, complete with a master bedroom and bathroom.

Images of the one-of-a-kind room show it decked out with luxury furnishings – including a four-poster bed and elegant dining table – and its open-air design allows guests to stare up at the starry night sky.

The house rules stipulate that guests mustn’t play loud music or attempt to ‘scale, skip, jump over, crawl under, or run the length of the wall’ during their stay.

The stunning two-person suite will be open for four nights this September to lucky competition winners.

To enter, participants must write on the Great Wall Airbnb listing page why it is ‘more important now than ever to break down barriers between cultures’ and ‘how you want to build new connections’.

Entries must be submitted by 11:59pm (Beijing time zone/GMT+8) on August 11.

Along with staying the night, winners will be treated to a gourmet Chinese dinner and a sunrise hike through China’s breathtaking countryside while learning about the Great Wall and efforts to preserve it.

There will also be an opportunity to learn some traditional calligraphy skills and the art of seal engraving.

Commenting on the project, the chairman and co-founder of Airbnb China, Nathan Blecharczyk, said: ‘It’s been an honour to work with historians and preservationist groups in Beijing to bring this once-in-a-lifetime experience to the world.

‘We are so proud to partner in this truly collective effort to highlight such an incredible landmark that now serves to unify people rather than divide them.’

Known as one of the greatest architectural feats in human history, the Great Wall was built as a border to protect Chinese states against raids thousands of years ago.

It is estimated to measure between 5,600 to 13,000 miles, depending on which sections are included.
