Picking a Combined XI of Tottenham & Chelsea Players Ahead of Saturday’s Clash

Tottenham Hotspur face Chelsea on Saturday afternoon, as the two return to Premier League action at Wembley Stadium.

This will be Maurizio Sarri’s first derby against Spurs since taking over at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham are missing five first team players, including Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose. For Chelsea, Mateo Kovacic is a doubt for Saturday, although he may well start the game should he past fitness tests.

Ahead of Saturday’s big Premier League clash, here’s a combined XI of the two teams.

1. Hugo Lloris

It’s a tight choice between Lloris and Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga, but the former just edges it. He has had a tough season so far, with shaky moments in goal and a red card in Spurs’ 2-2 draw with PSV.

Nevertheless, he is a world class goalkeeper. Lloris is experienced, agile and a great shot stopper, and it is hard to not pick him after he won the World Cup with France as the captain of Les Bleus.

2. César Azpilicueta

Chelsea’s captain has been very solid this season, as he is searching for his third Premier League title. Azpilicueta has been criticised at times recently, but he remains one of Chelsea’s key players.

He joined from Marseille in 2012, and cemented his place in the Chelsea defence under Antonio Conte. Now 29, he is leading by example.

3. Toby Alderweireld

Alderweireld is the only Spurs defender in this backline, and for a good reason. The 29-year-old is a solid centre-back and a key part of Tottenham’s defence. Despite this, the Belgian may not be at Spurs for much longer, having been linked to a move away since the summer.

Nevertheless, Alderweireld is an outstanding defender for club and country, and deserves to be acknowledged.

4. Antonio Rüdiger

Since joining from Roma in 2017, Rüdiger has become a fans’ favourite at Stamford Bridge. The German is an outstanding defender, who not only defends with his heart on his sleeve but is a great attacking player.

He is known to pop up with a goal from time to time, and his passing range is one of the best of any defender in the league. Rüdiger is a great asset to the Chelsea team, and looks likely to be there for many years to come.

5. Marcos Alonso

Having impressed at wing-back under Conte and left-back under Sarri, Marcos Alonso is one of the Premier League’s best defenders. Although sometimes his defending is questionable, he is fantastic going forward.

As well as this, Alonso has great memories of Wembley. The last time Spurs and Chelsea faced off under the iconic arch, Alonso scored a fantastic brace to secure a 2-1 win for the Blues.

6. Christian Eriksen

Eriksen is one of the Premier League’s best attacking midfielders, and has been at the heart of the Spurs midfield this season. The Dane will hope to replicate last season’s performance against Chelsea, when he scored a beautiful strike in their 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

This season, his stats don’t truly reflect his quality. Eriksen has just one goal and four assists for Spurs, but he remains a key part of the team.

7. N’Golo Kanté

Kanté has had an interesting season, as he began to attack more under new manager Maurizio Sarri. Despite this change in play, he has still been outstanding this season, and definitely one of Chelsea’s best so far.

Whether he should maintain his defensive position under Antonio Conte or stick with his new role under Sarri is up for debate, but either way the Frenchman is guaranteed to put in brilliant performances.

8. Jorginho

Maurizio Sarri’s first signing has been one to savour for the Blues, as Jorginho has gained a positive reputation at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian midfielder is breaking passing records every other week, as he dictates the game every time he plays. Jorginho will be looking forward to his first Tottenham derby, as he looks to continue his excellent form for the Blues.

9. Lucas Moura

Since leaving PSG for London at the start of the year, Lucas Moura has been outstanding.

A key part of Tottenham’s attack, he has played every league game this season under Mauricio Pochettino, and is loving life in North London.

10. Harry Kane

Tottenham’s star man is one of the Premier League’s best strikers.

Kane has scored ten goals for Spurs this season, captaining the side on several occasions. He has been their saviour on many occasions, including their recent 2-1 Champions League victory over PSV where he scored both goals.

Kane had one of his most iconic performances in a Spurs shirt against Chelsea, when he scored a brace as a 21-year-old in their 5-3 win back in 2015. Now 25, he will be searching for another landmark performance against the Blues.

11. Eden Hazard

It would be hard not to include Eden Hazard in a combined XI. The Belgian has been Chelsea’s star man this season, with eight goals and four assists in 14 appearances. After a small injury knock last month, he is back to full fitness.

Like Alonso, Hazard has good memories of playing against Spurs. In 2016, he scored a wonder goal at Stamford Bridge, levelling the score at 2-2. The goal was made even better by the circumstances, as the result meant Leicester City won the Premier League instead of Spurs.

Tottenham will be looking to get revenge on Chelsea’s winger, but not if he has anything to say about it again.
